Presence information is set to unknown for all users in Sharepoint in combination with Office 2007 and Outlook 2010.

Problem:

All users presence information in Sharepoint is set to “unknown” when a desktop is using Office 2007 and Outlook 2010.

Cause:

Office and Sharepoint are using aan activex component called name.dll for the presence information . When Office 2007 and Outlook 2010 are used there are two name.dll files. It appears that Internet Explorer is using the name.dll of Outlook 2010… However, presence is unknown…

Workaround:

  1. Close Outlook and the Lync client.
  2. Remove the name.dll from the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 directory.
  3. Copy the name.dll from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 directory to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 directory.
  4. Now start the Lync client and office applications.
  5. Now the presence information should work in Sharepoint 2010 using Office2007 look and feel.

Microsoft Edge changes!

This information is relevant for all companies that are federated with Microsoft.

The federated edge server that supports Instant Messaging and conferencing with external companies will be migrated to Lync Server 2010 on Friday March 18, 2011.

After the server migration, the IP address for the microsoft.com SIP domain will change to 65.55.130.30. External companies who are federated with Microsoft may need to make changes to their infrastructure outlined in Instructions below in order for the federation to continue to function successfully.

The IP address for the microsoft.com SIP domain is changing to 65.55.130.30 on Friday March 18, 2011. Depending on how their infrastructure is configured, they may need to make one of the following changes:

  • Companies configured as direct federations using IP address (not sipfed.microsoft.com) will need to update their configuration to the new IP address.
  • Companies using their firewall(s) to filter by IP address will need to update their Access Control List (ACL) to the new IP address

Note: External companies that are configured as an Enhanced federation and have configured their firewall(s) to Allow All (inbound and outbound) on TCP:5061 according to Microsoft’s recommendations will not need to make any changes. They will experience a brief interruption in their ability to contact Microsoft employees through Lync or Communicator while the A record in DNS is automatically updated to reflect the new IP address.
